Welcome to Village Primary School
Welcome to our website; thank you for taking an interest in our school.
As part of The Prince Regent Street Trust, we work collaboratively with the schools within the trust to ensure the best outcomes for all our children. Our trust is made up of Hartburn Primary, Village and Wolviston Primary.
At Village Primary School, we have the very highest expectations of progress and behaviour. We take pride in everything we do and challenge ourselves to be the very best within a nurturing environment. Our pupils are shining examples of our school ethos; their conduct is exemplary and they demonstrate impeccable manners on a daily basis.
Our pupils enjoy an engaging curriculum filled with real life experiences which foster independence, collaboration and determination to succeed; essential skills for life.
Through ‘Philosophy 4 Children’, which is embedded practise across school, we actively promote a culture of resilience where children feel safe and encouraged to problem solve, question, debate and express opinions.
We take pride in our consistent teaching approaches across school from Nursery to Year 6. Talk 4 Writing, Reciprocal Reading and Maths of the Day are examples of whole school strategies to instil metacognition. In other words, we are keen to help children find the best way that they learn. Our pupils can articulate their learning and next steps. Even our very mature Year 6 pupils understand the importance of using practical equipment in maths. Because of these hands on experiences, children at Village have a real love of learning!
Our classes enjoy learning through themed topics, which include lots of rich experiences to bring the curriculum to life. Our Nursery and Reception classes are relishing the opportunity to access learning in our outdoor area. In fact, all children throughout school learn in and outside the classroom. The installation of our Village pond and outdoor classroom, on the school field, forms part of our eco area where children enjoy learning about plants, animals, conservation and growing their own food. We are very proud to announce that we have achieved our Green Flag award this year due to our dedication to the environment and engendering a culture of local and global citizenship.
Visitors join us in school to enrich the curriculum, in more ‘normal’ times without the pandemic.
We also take the children on a diverse range of educational visits in our local community and further afield. During the last academic year, our classes enjoyed meeting an array of wild animals, watched Fire Brigade demonstrations, visited the theatre, have taken part in science labs at secondary school and a World War One workshop, to name a few. These ‘hands on’ experiences are vital to help children learn or to find their special skills, and talents, for later in life and the world of employment.
We are an incredibly health conscious school; healthy eating and fitness is very important to us. Skilled sports coaches lead lessons and train our teachers in a wide range of sports from gymnastics to cricket. We also offer daily sports clubs; this after-school provision caters for all interests. We are proud to announce that we have been awarded the Gold Award for competitive sports again! This competitive element is vital in helping children to maximise their talents and success.
Confidence is key! We have a strong culture of promoting performing arts and this really fosters confidence in other areas of the curriculum. By the end of Key Stage 2, our experienced performers bring audiences to tears with their maturity and empathy. This is something that starts with a nativity in Early Years and KS1, then develops through Spring drama productions in Y3/4 and is honed in upper Key Stage Two.
Village Primary School is a Rights Respecting School and our ethos actively promotes British Values and Global Learning. Everything we do is child centred. We are proud of our heritage and incredibly proud to be part of a larger Thornaby community.
During lockdown, as part of the trust, we made sure that safety and safeguarding were at the heart of everything that we did. Indeed, despite restrictions with Covid-19, we are committed to all children receiving the best education and helping children to fulfil their potential.
